In future, FM be used for 5G, the new mobile network that will provide higher data speeds and more stability than today`s 4G.
EBU, the European Broadcasting Union, is considering such a change, it was revealed at Digitalforum in Oslo, last week.
- We are talking about it, and a pilot (test) is possible in Norway, said Gunnar Garfors, NRK, during his presentation of broadcasting on 5G.
Norway was the first country to shut down FM in 2017, but only the national broadcasters are now digital, there are still 190 local radio stations that broadcasts on FM, at least until 2022.
However, local radio stations do not cover everywhere. - There are areas of Norway where there is nothing on FM, explained Garfors who also stressed that no decicion has been made.
Experts radionytt.no has consulted, thinks using FM is a poor solution for 5G. The reach will geographically be wider, but capacity is quite poor, seems to be the concensus.
Europe has already decided to use the 700 Mhz-band for 5G, but further frequenzies are needed.
At the same conference, Garfors told Digitalforum about a test NRK is conducting, using LTE (4G) for broadcasting. This year a small town in western Norway will be able to receive 4 TV
channels via 4G. This technology can also be used on 5G and for radio broadcasting.
