While Swedish radio can celebrate a huge increase in advertising, Norwegian radio had a bad year in 2018.
The total income of radio advertising was down 10,7 % in 2018 compared til 2017, according to numbers from Mediebyråforeningen. This is advertising sold via agencies, which includes most commercials sold on national radio in Norway. In 2018 they sold radio ads for 380 millioner kroner, close to 38 mill. euros.
The downfall comes after the FM shutdown in 2017 which resulted in a huge loss of listeners for the Norwegian national channels. Local radio continues to broadcast on FM and is outside of these numbers, selling their advertising locally.
In Sweden, fresh numbers show that radio advertising was up 22,4 % in 2018 compared to 2017. Sweden launched three new national channels on FM in 2018, all of them were commercial stations that earlier broadcast in networks around the country with varying degree of coverage.
