Pressemelding: From 9 November BBC Radio 5 live hands the news agenda to the people, in an innovative new show on Sunday nights. From 7.30pm to 10.00pm, award-winning journalist and broadcaster Emma Barnett presents The 5 live Hit List - the UK's first comprehensive weekly news chart.
In an original and unique format, each week the worlds of social media and radio will collide to bring listeners a countdown of the top 40 stories making waves across the web and social media.
The 5 live Hit List has been commissioned exclusively for 5 live from Wire Free Productions who are working in collaboration with social media experts COSMOS (Collaborative Online Social Media Observatory). Each the week COSMOS specialist team, drawn from some of the UK’s top universities, will produce the chart based on the UK’s most clickable content. A specially developed unique algorithm will analyse key words and hashtags to evaluate and rank the impact of each story and Emma will count them down, ending with the hotly anticipated number one.
Covering news, politics, sport, showbiz and more, Emma will take an in-depth look at the most engaging, entertaining and unusual stories, as well as tracking down content authors and the subjects of the headlines themselves. Incorporating audience input and reactions via text and social media, each week the show will feature guests from the worlds of journalism, entertainment and online.
While live on air, the chart will simultaneously be revealed at bbc.co.uk/5live and on @BBC5live, where links to associated audio and video clips, photos and articles will be published, providing a one-stop shop for people looking for bite-sized shareable content.
A self-confessed radio addict, Emma Barnett is the youngest presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour and she has presented shows on other radio networks for several years. Previously Digital Media Editor of The Daily Telegraph and the newspaper’s current Women’s Editor, Emma brings together a passion for broadcasting with a unique perspective on what makes the digital nation tick, saying: "I love the idea of listeners deciding the news agenda and this show reflecting the stories people are really talking about. The stories we should be interested in, versus the ones we actually are, can be surprisingly and amusingly different. Presenting The 5 live Hit List is going to be very revealing indeed. It combines three of my biggest interests: the fast paced world of social media, brilliant stories going crazy and of course, radio. Let the chart commence."
Jonathan Wall, Controller, BBC Radio 5 live, added: "At 5 live we love nothing more than trying new formats and turning innovative ideas into live radio. In Emma Barnett we have one of the brightest young presenting talents in the country - she's a great writer and I have no doubt she will be a top class broadcaster for Radio 5 live too."
The 5 live Hit List is being made for 5 live by Wire Free Productions.
